Default Fired Up 370ci APE For First Time!!!

BUT I have a couple of questions . . . the car seems normal for I'd say the 1st 20-30 seconds . . . then the blue smoke starts rolling out. Continues for about 5 minutes and then stops ( whether I'm driving or just idling ). At the same time the smoke starts, the idle of the car changes. The motor has a total of I'd say 35 miles on it so far. Plus it only seems to smoke when it is stone-cold, like overnite, or all day at work in the parking lot.

I am going to pull the hose off the butt-pipe to check for oil, any other things I should be keeping an eye out for? I know a new motor will smoke for a while, but how long is too long?

Depends on where it comes from, sometimes crap will be on your exhaust and that can take a long time to fully burn off.

Well, this is definitely coming OUT of the exhaust, it definitely appears to be oil burning from the motor . . . I did have OTHER smoking, like from the engine until all the crap burned off, but this is different.

Doug, do you have the turbos onit right now? Also if the smoke stops, after like 5 minute and seems to be worse after sitting over night, it could be valve seals. Give me a call and we can try to figure it out together.

Thanks,

Hmmm, just got off the phone with Chris, I think he could be right about the valve seals . . . sitting overnite the oil drips onto the piston, that's why it burns off and then no more. Anybody else??

It could be a vavel seal witch is realy easy to change.
Also I could be the rings still seatting. It takes 1000miles or so for them to total seat.

Justin, are you sure about the 1000 miles?? I was thinking 500 would be plenty . . . and if it were the rings they wouldn't just smoke for 5 minutes, wouldn't it be an ongoing thing?

This y it is so hard to figure out what is going on in a motor. The only reason it could be the rings is when it is cold metal shinks so you have a looser bottom ring in there. Once it heats up it would go away.

I have always been told 1k for ring seat. I bet 500 is enuff but i would like to make sure before romping on the car because if the rings dont seat properly you can have the problem that u are having now.

It was not tapped . . . it was just a hole with no threads in it.

LOL, no doubt! Up until this week, the last time I drove my SS was January 30th, 2004. And in the meantime I've been driving a Chevy Metro ( 3cyl ).

My engine builder told me to break-in my stroker for "AT VERY LEAST" 1000 miles. I followed his advice to the letter! Better to be safe than sorry. I had to add 3 qt of oil in those first 1000 miles, but no significant oil consumption after that.

P.S.: I had no smoking whatsoever with mine. Something must be wrong with your setup. Hopefully, it will no be too bad. I hope for you that it's just the valve seals.

Best of Luck Dug!

P.S.: Awesome numbers!!!
