Quick cam question.

Quick cam question. I read the Cam FAQ. and i have a (very, very) slight understanding.
I just need to ask a few questions as what to look for when i purchase my cam (within the next 2 weeks).
My exhaust system is stock with the exception of the slowmaster exhaust.
I am looking for decent power gains, remain close to my current MPG (or go up. down is NOT an option. as i do a lot of long distance driving), and sound.
God yes sound. I was aiming for, in the end, to have the classic muscle car sound.
After, or soon before i get the cam, i am going to have my exhaust cut, and run a Y pipe after the cat (if this is wise. if not, please comment.)

You should be doing you basic bolt-ons (headers/hiflow exhaust/pulley/TB) prior to a cam. I notised you have a lid so it is a step in the right direction. It's a system and everything need to be configured properly for optimum results. You will end up losing power not doing headers first because you will be choking the out flow. BTW, cam will change idle characteristic and add lobe to the exhaust not BUT headers will more affect your overall sound and should be done definately before a cam.
I didn't lose any fuel ecconomy with the TR224 114. It also worked well through stock exhaust with slowmaster muffler. The sound was much improved but not too rough. Maybe not optimum, but nice never the less.
