Default timing chain guide???

Hey guys/girls. I have a 2001 Camaro SS, and im process of doing timing chain swap over to double roller. What do I do to get the lowr part off crank that timing chain rides on? Do I need a 2 jaw puller? What did you guys do for this when switching to rollermaster double roller chain? Thanks.

i converted my 3 arm pullley pulller to a 2 arm. to install the new double crank spot i put it on as far as it'd go then, then took the stock crank sprocket and put it over it. lastly i hammered it lightly untill it was seat.

are there alignment dowels or anything of that nature on the snout? I dont want to take the old one off and then mess up timing.

Or do I just have to take #1 to TDC?
thanks

Anyone else have any advice? Jrp: So you used a 2 jaw puller to pull the chain holder off?

I used a 2 jaw puller to get it off. Like jrp said, use the old gear to hammer the new one on, but hit it lightly or the chain might bind against the block.

I used two hook prybars and it comes off with ease. Before you do put the cam and crank dot to dot for future reference. If this is a rollmaster you can do the following. To put the new one on you need to look at the sprocket and there will be two dots on it. There is also a key on the crank already that will stay on there. The dot on the outside of the sprocket closest to you will line up with the key. Slide it on and hammer it in abit. Then your other dot should be straight up and you line the two gears dot to dot. Now it will look just like it did when you took it off. The oil pump is a biatch to get back on if you are doing it in the car. Sometimes the spacers are alittle tricky also.

#1 TDC is dot to dot. Before you take it out make it dot to dot and then make the new one dot to dot and you dont' have to think about it. The cam pin will need to be at 3:00 to make the sprocket dot point straight down. This will make it easy for reinstalling. Put the lower dot pointed straight up like you took it off and then put the cam pin at 3:00 and then slide the chain and gear on at the same time. It takes some finaceing alittle but you will get it. If you are doing this in the car becareful not to pinch the oil pump o-ring when puting the pump back on.

The spacers move the oil pump out about an 1/8 inch. The problem is the pickup tube doesn't move so it has to kind of bend to reach. That can put more pressure on one side of the o-ring and make it easier to pinch.

Default crank gear

Had some pics on my car domain site...

As you can see you, these are the two dots mentioned by GueSS who.

The 1st dot closest to the us gets alighned to the keyway. This is the standard position. Keys to the left of Std are Adv and keys to the right of Std are Rtd. The 2nd dot on the sproket is used to dial the cam in to the dot on the cam gear.
