What labor charge do you / will you (if the price changes because of the new tool), charge for a cam swap?

I'm down for one of those as I dropped a lifter while doing my cam change even with the pen magnets (one wasn't as magnetic as the others I guess).

 

is this something that bolts to the head and you use a socket to compress the spring?

Hey classiccolletor, how did you know you dropped a lifter. Was the pushrod way lower than the rest of them?

I am nervous I might have dropped a lifter myself. Before changin the cam, I would turn the cam and the lifters would stay up overnight. You would have to push them down with the pushrod. Now after installing the new cam some of the lifters seem to follow the cam without being hung up. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

However when I drop in the pushrods they are stick out the same distance out of the heads, leaving me to believe that none of the lifters dropped. I dunno.

 

Its pretty easy to tell. When pulling the cam out I heard a clunk in the bottom of the motor as if something had fallen to the oil pan. There was also someone (me) saying something rather loud (F#$@...) at that point.

 

Would this new "tool" be some kind of cylinder that you could slide in around the cam to hold the lifters up, then slide the cam out/in inside the cylinder? I'm not sure there is exactly enough room in there to do that, but that would solve the problems.

 

JPR can you post some pics of the tool or is it still to early to show pic for patent reasons?? Im interested in seeing this thing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

I just finished my first cam swap TODAY with all 16 annoying pen magnets...

Glad I could speed up the developement of this new tool <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

uh oh. I swear I heard a clunk. I was hoping it was the cam bumping something.

How did you get the lifter out? Did you have to remove the heads?

 

Lifter out should be pretty straightforward. It's probably in the oil pan. Drop the pan and go fishing.

Putting the lifter in is the bitch, tho. Gotta pull the head. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

After thinking for a minute I would have to guess its something that slides in the lifter galleys from the front when the cam retainer plate is removed - just a guess <img src="https://ls1tech.com/threads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
