Default Which cam to use?!?!

i have a 98 Camaro Z with an A4 and 2.73 gears and 104K on the clock. I was wanting all of your guys help on which cam. I just put an ORY on, and I still have stock manifolds. I still would like to keep stock gears, and stall, but also to have it idle a little rough. I am also trying to learn everything about my LS1, and so far, i love it. If i buy this cam, do i need to springs, pushrods, rockers, retainers, or anything else. PLEASE HELP

THANKS TO ALL AT LS1TECH.COM for your help

Call Allan or Candy at Futral Motorsports (www.futralmotorsports.com) , talk to him about what you want and what you have, and he will grind you the perfect cam.

5900 rpm is only 500 rpm higher than where the stock cam peaks. Almost any aftermarket cam will peak above 6000 rpm. Stock rev limit is at 6200, so why not go at least that high? Even 6500 would be conservative enough.

yeah what the guy above me said, atleast go to 6500 if you install a bigger cam, make sure you upgrade the valvetrain also,l springs, pushrods. As for the best cam, all you will get is opinions on that one, or we would all be running the same cam. Just research and pick one, you will be happy with just about any mainstream cam out there.

If 5900 is all you want to rev, then stick with the stock cam and raise your shift points by 100 rpm and your rev limiter by another 100

Listen to JRP... You need the bolt-on's first. Good intake, long tubes headers, high flow cat's,a good cat's back and maybe a t-body or ported t-body. After this, then you can do a cam...
You should have your tranny & engine checked since it has high miles .

I'm w/jrp on this one. Do all the bolt ons - LS6 intake, headers, etc, then maybe higher stall converter-or not right away- if you're not sure where your going w/the cam. Follow the cam grinders recommedations on any valvetrain upgrades.
But if you're looking for a big boost in 1/4 mile performance, a good stall TC goes a LONG way.
Best of luck.

the only problem with that is...if ur running with stock internals u better be a hell of a driver b/c one skipped gear and its over with a cam.

If you mean that missing a shift with a cam and stock bottom end = boom, Not quite. I've missed quite a few shifts with heads/cam and my motor's fine That's what we have a rev limiter for. Your bottom end is pretty damn strong, rod bolts are the weak link.

Dang you beat me to that comment, I have missed a few shifts especially when my master was fugging up, and I am very thankful for our rev limiter.

As for him not being ready for a cam, he might might not care if he is getting all the power out of a cam that he wants. You can also stick a cam in for less money if you do it right than headers, intake, and stall. Will he get all the potential from the cam install, no, but what if he justs wants the sound and lope that a cam gives and quick horsepower why not? If I was him I would wait also, but some people already have their mind made up so why not just help with their decision? As for your car being high mileage, is it a daily driver that you depend on? If so I would not get crazy with power adders on that high of mileage motor unless you can be down a while if something breaks. The optimal thing to do would be to get full bolt ons like jrp said and wait to refresh that motor and then go into the internals.
