Grinding front cover question?
Some friends and I are trying to get this new MTI motor into my car and in the process we noticed that the front cover doesn't fit flush against the motor. I had contacted MTI and they said that with the double roller and oil pump combo that I have on there that its not uncommon for some people to have to grind a part of their front cover down for clearance. My question is has anybody done this and if so do you have any pictures or advice so we do not screw this up. TIA, and I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum as I was confused on where this thread might end up

I have not heard or read anyone having to grind down the front cover for a double roller. All I remember is having to machine certain after market crank pulleys to get things to fit.
Like anything else you are going to have to use something that will tell you where the contact is so you can grind the inside of the cover down to get things to fit. Like grease, marking compound, etc.

Hi folks
when I put on my double timing chain with the spacers for the oil pump. I did not have the clearance problem but it was recommended to grind the cover if needed and the block (top boss).

PS: now I remembered, I had to grind the cover where the oil seal is(for the crank). The problem is with the spacers pushing the oil pump out about .090" if I remember correctly. the cover would hit the front of the oil pump.

looks to me like i will have to grind MORE than the thickness of the timing cover.
is this the first motor ever to have this combo! come on guys....
mti oil pump and double roller.. yes the pump is spaced with the standard shim but then something else is hitting.. seems like just on the right side... badly
what the heck is up with mti sending this out with out a heads up on the grinding anyways...
its bad enough they sent the complete wrong year cyl. head for the order and have set us back a week waiting on new valvecovers (that they still did not send brackets for ) very annoyed i am when my free time is wasted.
mti.. lets hear the solution.

motor fired right up last night.. copious amounts of valvetrain noise but seems to run smooth.
i probably ground 3/4 of the way through the timing cover in two spots. very intense moments.
no thanks to mti for not sending the coil brackets.. had to steal some off a friends engine.

I did not have to grind that much off the cover and the only place I needed to grind was on the case for the crank seal.
