There are better options power wise, but I swapped in an LS6 long block from GM Performance Parts because water doesn't compress when it enters the lower front ram air on your LS1 because your favorite
local covenience store fails to keep the drainage system in the parking lot clear and you end up in over a foot of water causing a piston to shatter into many pieces and twist a connecting rod into an "S" shape. Yeah, that was a run-on rant, but said local convenience store was found to be responsible for the damage so all the parts had to come from GM and appear to be stock (they paid for them). The engine was swapped and with nothing more than a tune (you'll need one) it's running in the mid to low 12's.
Very easy and I'm very happy. Gas mileage wasn't affected either!

Hi Folks
if you want low risk approach, go with the LS6 (GM ported heads and Cam). I have not Dyno'ed my car as of this posting but I have been told I should see around 400+ RWHP. Yes there are better cams but it is a function on what you are looking for.

I had planned on going the 2004 LS6 head and cam route (405hp setup) but decided to try AFR heads instead. I have a brand new set of heads in box and new cam in tube and would sell it below dealer cost if someone was interested. That would be about half the price of doing AFR and custom cam.
