Default Bearing clearance ?'s

Specifically main bearings. We had the machine shop we use set them at .0021 to .0025 in this motor we are doing. Is this where they should be? I just had someone tell me earlier this am, at another shop, that with an LS1 they have to be no more than .0019, preferably .0012-.0018 to make proper oil pressure. Personaly, I think the dude was full of ****, or just too picky, what's your opinions?

You'll be alright with those clearances, but you'll have lower oil pressure.
I have .015-.020" on my mains, a a little bigger spread (up to .025+") on my rod bearings due to some liberal polishing.

Either way you'll be fine, just don't be surprised if the oil pressure is lower.

The clearance is always personal preference. On a aluminum block we currently shoot for .0011-.0016. On a iron block below 1000hp we shoot for .0021-.0025. On a drag engine above 1000hp we would start to loosen the clearance up as high as .003.

Thats cool, sounds like we'll be ok either way, but from now on I will specify to my machine shop no more than .002. Thank you for the info. As always LS1tech.

I would be happy with that. We have an iron block 370 that only does 40 cold and 25 hot idle. But it maintains 40+ at cruise and 55-60 at WOT. Ive heard 10 psi/1000 rpm and your ok.

On a side note, where did you pick up those Motron 60# ?

The mains are run tighter ( in general) on aluminum blocks because the aluminum expands more than an iron block. I am putting together a 403 aluminum with about 1.6 clearance and the crank spins very easily.
