Default Identifying an LS1

I am considering buying a pull out motor complete with acc, PCM, and harness. To keep it "honset", I'd like to know how to best verify the model year by looking at the motor and/or it's code. I found this thread https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...fying+year+ls1 in my search, but the info only goes up to year 2000 (Z). I would appreciate info on the codes for 2001 and up. If there's another thread that covers this, then please direct me to it. A pic of where the code is located would be helpful too.

Thanks,

Andy1

Since I will be buying from a salvage dealer, I may not be able to see or verify which car it actually comes from; ergo my need for reading the code.

Guys, if I can't use the head casting number as gospel, then I'd really like to be able to read the code.

Thanks,

Andy1

I appreciate the offer, but I'd like to be able to identify the motor on the spot. Actually, all I really need are the codes for the year of the motor, as I think the other stuff is either un-necessary, or can be identified visually....can't mistake it for a LQ4 or an LS6.

Thanks,

Andy1

Read the part number on the intake.... check and see if its an ls6 model. If so... then you've got an 01-02 motor unless it was swapped. Then check the head casting number...

well it'd be easier if GM only used one set of pt# per year but they use multiple part numbers for the same parts often superceeding (sp) others. thats why i say it'd be easier to get the numbers first so we could help you out.

Well, if that's how it has to be, then I'll do what I can to get the numbers first. In the link I provided in my first post, the following:

"The tenth [character] is model year v= 97 w=98 x=99 z= 2000 I don't know what they did after that"

So I assume there is nothing similar in the 2001 and later part numbers stamped on the block?
