Default cam install??

Im sure this has been asked 500 times, but im going to ask again.. Is it or it it not possible to install a cam in my LS1 without having to remove the intake.. I have been told that i can do this in an LS1 because the lifters wont fall. If so can someone explain what i need to do.. so i dont have any problems. I just want to do a simple swap. I dont want to remove the intake if i dont have to.

you can leave the intake on. the lifter valley's are under the head, not the intake like gen 1-2 motors.

i use magnets but i'd just as well save the money and buy the 3/8 or 5/16 aluminum rods from home depot or lowes.

Magnets worked for me and my friend when we put a cam in his car. I've heard of folks having trouble with the rods. Some lifters won't go up far enough to fit the rod all the way in. I've even heard a shop professional/owner condemn the rods for that reason. I think either way is better than Russian roulette, though.

Yes, I'm also curious on the rods. Would threaded rod work and how long. I've got lots of that lying around here.

For the 2001 & '02 cars, doesn't one dowel rod for a side or both need to be trimmed in some fashion?

If so, where?

RR method here. Those lifters freaking stick. Just spin the cam fast with the chain off and the gear back on. And if one starts to slide, I just push it up from the cam opening with a ratchet end.
