Default Oil Pump Pickup tube: optimal clearance from oil pan?

I am putting together the bottom end of the shortblock right now, and wante dto see what kind of spacing I should be looking for from the pickup tube to the bottom of the oilpan? Also, has anyone ever welded the pickup tube to the mounting stand? It seems very weak with what looks like 2 spot welds...

I've always seen the spec for the pick up at .250" or 1/4" away from the bottom of the oil pan?
