I would imagine the better head flow capabilities of these engines means they don't need as large of a cam as older SBCs.

Anyone look at what cam Vipers come with? Their heads flow like ***, so they have a pretty aggressive cam,

297/305 total duration.

i agree.why would you need to run a big cam when you can consistently get 400+ rwhp with cams in the 224-230 range?

The 224 "wonder" cam is also popular because it can pass emissions in the **** state of California. I ran a 224 cam untuned and it was very streetable, but also made the power alot of people are looking for in the mid range. As mentioned earlier, the bottom end will live a long time with this cam...shifting at 6600. It is a popular cam to get around 400 rwhp, which is a goal of many enthusiasts on the board for a DD.

15 degree valve angle does not allow for much in the room of duration and lsa because the valves are much closer to the pistons to start out with. Also, tuning becomes a real problem with some of these monsters as well. You have to go to SD tuning and many don't want to do that. Some do run cams very big though. I've been recommended a 26x/26x .766"/.753" 110lsa 106icl cam for my upcoming 408. I may even go bigger. Like said before they are out there just not as in as big a number.

Thanks for the input!

Looks like a 224 cam is indeed a good choice since it can pass emissions, maintain good drivability (even without a tune?), and help a NA LS1 make 100 more rwhp over stock. Is that gain possible with the stock heads?

Sounds like to go bigger than 240@0.050 requires speed density tuning or a carburator.

A tunen will only help the cam you get. It's not "needed", but highly recommended. 100rwhp over stock....that depends on what "stockhp" is in your cars case. i seriously doubt you will eclipse the 400rwhp barrier with stock '98 heads.

and no, speed density tuning or carburator tuning is not needed to get a 240+ duration cam to run in a 346 car. It takes a tuner who knows what they are doing.

I agree.
A Tune is gonna be your friend. Please spend the extra 500 dollars and get the most out of your car. When you add exhaust, headers, and you normal bolton's you see a nice difference in your air/fuel ratio's, and I would suggest a tune with bolton's only. Now you gonna add a cam with everything else and still not get tuned? I think that is just stupid. This can defentially do damage over time and not allow your car to run as good as it should.
Most tuners charge very little for retunes, and trust me its a good investment.
