Valve spring question (ASA)

Talking Valve spring question (ASA)

Crane Dual Rev Springs
Thunder Racing Chromoly Pushrods
Titaium Retainers
Titanium Stems
Titanium Seats

That's what is left inside the engine after the TR230/224/111 was replaced by the stock cam.
The Crane duals have approx 20000 miles on them.
Do I need to buy new Crane Duals or I can go with the old ones?
I'm gonna go with the ASA cam 226/236 0.525"/0.525" 110 LSA

Ive heard of people running 918's with that cam. As long as you didnt have any valve float issues I dont see a problem in running em.

Those crans duals should be fine since your not really pushing them at all.

Trying to save a little if I can. 150$ for the springs and another 150$ for the spring change. It could go toward to the 9".

What are the spring specs?

Link me to a chart. YOu want to make sure all the pressures are correct,
especially the open pressure and seat pressure.

Even more a factor, what is the coil bind CLEARANCE?

If the install height will be 1.8", then the open height will be 1.275"

That leaves 0.250" clearance which is alot.

The concern now is, at the open height of 1.275", will the open pressure
be adequate for you RPM range?

Just a quick guess, but I would say there's about 300 lbs. @ 1.275"

What ratio rocker are you going to use?

What is your RPM limit?

What will be the install height?

From those questions, you can decide how much shimming, or offset locks/retainer
combos to get the open pressure you need.

If your current Dual springs are not worn out they will be more than enough for that cam through it's entire power range. You do not want to have too much spring as it makes it harder to opem the valves, therefore costing power.

I can answear for two more questions my limits are the lack of knowledge about cams/valvetrain.
rocker ratio? I guess the stock one
RPM? The cam claimed to make power up to 6500rpm
so my revlimit will be set just a little bit higher
like 6700.

LS1 ASA camshaft 1.7 Rocker ratio.

Just to confirm:

- Stock rocker ratio of 1.7

- 6700 RPM limit

Can anyone tell us the LS1 STOCK install height?

We need to determine the open height based on the stock install height.

That means, how tall the spring stands from the head to the retainer when
the valve is closed.

From that information, you can calculate the open height and pressure using
the spring mfg. data.

If the open pressure is not enough, you can shim the spring to 'pre-load', or
compress the spring. This will bring the open height closure to the recommended
pressures.

What you are giving up in return is the amount of maximum valve lift and
clearance before coil bind.

Once again in case you missed it:

Can anyone tell us the LS1 STOCK install height?

I run comp 918s with my asa with no problems. take a couple of your springs off and have them tested for presssure. duals are alot of spring for .525 lift but shouldnt hurt anything. if your cam only you wont turn that much rpm. my limiter is set at 6400.

20K miles is a decent beating with the TR230. The springs may have more life in them. Checking them can only tell you if they're still good now, but for how much longer, who knows? The ASA's low lift and sleepy ramp rates won't be a spring killer, we all know that, but if I were you, I'd swap those Crane's out for some fresh springs, even if they're lowly (fresh) '02+ LS6 springs that are right out of the box (those could be found for very cheap). If it were my engine, Comp 918's would be going on there.

PS, I have that old ASA clip on my laptop. I'll have to fish it out for you tomorrow.
