Default The unexpected happened

Well, i just broke off a bolt in my block while putting my heads back on. I tightened them to 22ft lbs, then did the first 90 sequence, was making my 2nd pass on the #2 ( passenger side, middle bottom) and it snapped. It's all the way in the bottom of my block... The bolts were given to me in a big bag by FFHP. Some of the bolts were missing, and there were extras of some. Not sure what to do.. Motor is probly going to have to come out.

ANY help is appreciated.

Gonna have to try an easy out to remove it.

I have read of this happening with brand new bolts. It can also happen if the bolt holes are not cleaned very well, or if there is coolant/water in tiny amounts left in the threads.

Since there isn't any stress on the bolt now, you might be able to find an easy out and back the broken piece out. I realize that it is unlikely that you will find one long enough but you could try and have it welded to the bolt you are holding in your picture. Just a thought for the do it yourselfer.

That doesn't really look like a new bolt to me.

I would think that if they were new bolts, they should have come in a sealed bag. Missing some bolts/having extra of others means a phone call to the sponsor who sold you the bolts.

the bolts are new, we buy them in bulk so they don't come in sealed bags like they come from the GM parts counter. we missed putting the 4 short ones in the original shipment, so yes some where missing.
an easy out welded to a long drill bit is the only thing that comes to mind on this one

Good response, I like that you keep up with the board and its people. Shows real class. W.E.

Like others said, use a easy out. When you drill the bolt, see if you can get a long nylon bushing or something like that will slide down in the bolt hole so you don't run the risk of hitting the threads and will get more dead center on the bolt. Just an idea.

That's what I was thinking, but that doesn't help his delema.

Best thing to do if you don't want to make matters worse, take the car to a machine shop and let an experienced machinist get it out for you.

And when you put it back together, use ARP studs. The only way to go!

You should ask a machine shop what they would do if you brought it in. And then do it yourself.

There is a way to "burn" bolts out of aluminum heads without damaging the surrounding material - I've heard about it, but can't remember what the process is called. If drilling easy-outing doesn't work, and before you go to any extreme measures, it's probably a good idea to have a machinist look at it.

I agree with the smaller bolt and JB weld idea.
Maybe you can get lucky.

Try an easy out, don't let the shavings get into the block!
DO NOT break an easy out in the bolt. Easy outs are hard and brittle. If you break one in the bolt, it will really suck trying to drill it out.

When putting the bolts back in, make sure the threads are clean, both on the bolt and in the block. Use a thread cleaning tool to clean the threads. Also use the manufacturers recomended lubricant and torque specs.
