Procedure to check valve springs?

Procedure to check valve springs? Trying to figure out why my car is chugging under load, and idles like crap. The valvetrain noise has increased substantially. New motor, with ~500 miles on it. After reading a few posts, it sounds like a valve spring may have let go or something. Is their an easy way to just CHECK them out. I looked on howto.com, and not being mechanically inclined it looks like I can figure it out. It’s a ’99 so I need to remove the coil packs, then the covers – is that it?
I've been posting this same response since I figured out my stumbling and idle problems. I had a loose spark plug wire. Check those out, particularly number 8. It might save you a lot of headache.
