Can I go to conventional oil after using Synthetic for 40000 miles?

If your burning that much oil but not noticing any fouling or signs of oil burning on the plugs it sounds like the exhaust valve seal is leaking, or if its burning in the combustion chamber I would look into a PVC problem with that much oil consumption.

I think your problem is with the oil scraper ring allowing oil to the top side of the piston. No matter what oil you put in it your going to use oil.
But to answer your original question yes you can switch to regular oil with no problem at all.
