Default Timing Chain Question

I have read that the SLP double roller is just an over priced rollmaster double. Is there any validity to this? Imm looking to save money where I can with my cam, install so if this is the case I will get the rollmaster rather than the SLP. Thanks for any info.

Since you don't want to waste money, you should forget about the double roller chain, it's overkill. Get a LS2 chain or a JWIS single roller, whichever is cheapest.

Since you don't want to waste money, you should forget about SLP altogather. Cal's right, look into an LS2 chain for a hair over 28 bucks and reuse your stock sprockets.

Well Im not trying to squeeze every penny I can, I was just wondering if the SLP and Rollmaster were the same things. Is the LS2 just as good?

Thanks

I belive there was a thread a while back that indicated most of the double roller chains are made by the same company. I think an LS2 chain would be even better than a double roller; less rotating mass and it will never cause interferance with an under drive pulley. BTW, these pulleys are an excellent mod that works and has no side effects if you don't already have one. How do you like the aluminum flywheel?

I decided to go with the LS2. No hassles with changing crank gears, spacing out oil pump, or getting the pickup tube back into the pump. Plus the price is right.

Thanks that clears things up alot. I think I will look into the LS2 chain. Part #?

Cal, I like the aluminum flywheel it revs up like a ****. Its not bad at all when shifting. I had heard that it can kill revs when shifting but no probs here.

to get that old chain off and new one on don't you need to remove the oil pump? I've heard some horrible stories with crimped oil pump O rings and such, which makes me want to leave on the old one, but if it can be done without removing all that I'm all for it. From pictures it looks like the oil pump would have to be removed, I just want to make sure before I purchase a LS2 chain?

LS2 timing chain P/N is 12586482 - about $25 from GM Parts Direct or Gene at Fred Beans.

Yes, you need to remove the oil pump. Do it now or do it later...

It's not that hard to reinstall the oil pump, don't let the horror stories freak you out. As someone else said, "Just go slow and think about what you are doing." Use a new O-ring and lube it up good first. Then just kind of work it in there slow, don't force-fit it.

I just installed a Rollmaster Chain and LS6 Ported Pump with my cam. It is not that hard to install. Check out LS1howto.com The rollmaster is the same as the SLP.

The oil pump and pickup tube O-ring are a PITA, but not that hard. I installed a rollmaster double and new oil pump with my cam swap and it went alright. Just be very carefull with that pickup tube bolt. There is a blurb about that in my cam swap thread. (see sig link)

So wait, if i am to do a LS2 timing chain with my install, do I need to remove the oil pump if i am not going to replace it? Or does it need removed to get the chain around the crank gear?or does the LS2 timing chain part # 12586482 come with a new crank gear that needs to be put on?
thx rob

LS2 chain works with your existing timing gears. You have to take the pump off because it traps the chain with it's mounting points.
