Default Is 89K on the LS1 too much to start doing big mods?

My car runs great but I was thinking of doing heads/cam in a month or so.. my oil pressure hot is like 35..

do I have too many miles to be trying to force more out of the engine.. should I just do a whole new engine and swap out/sell the old?

I would not being going for crazy power but ported heads and a decen (not very lopy) cam..

thanks

Its really up to you. There are people on the board that have well over 100k still spraying 150 shots. I'd say if its running good, not burning oil, etc.....go for it. You can always use the heads and cam on a new shortblock when the time comes.

there are ppl out there that put their first aftermarket cam in after 100k miles. i'm just shy of 70k and should be putting a cam in in a few months, if all goes well. these motors can go for a good while if properly taken care of.

you could also get a nice used block w/35-40k on it cheap and sell the current block for parts if you're that concerned about it. but you should be ok if a leakdown test comes out alright.

I'm at 94k miles, and I have put 3 cams in the car, drive it every day, drive it hard, and still looking to do more mods. As long as you take care of it you will be fine. Just install a new oil pump and timing chain and you should have no worries. Do things right, and things will last.

cool... I do not burn any oil at all so I guess I should take that as a sign that I may be good for heads/cam

Do a leakdown test. That will let you know where you stand.

How much does it typically cost to do a leakdown test, assuming a shop rate of 50/hr.

you can easily do the compression test yourself.. all you need is a compression gauge and a ratchet with an extension and a 5/8ths plug socket..

my car has 108k miles on it and I beat on it everyday and go through a full bottle a week.. if you keep the oil changed and dont do stupid **** all the time then your motor will love you long time! i'll be doing PRC heads/Custom Cam swap in the next few weeks so I guess we will just see..

At 77,000 miles just notched the pistons and put in my fourth cam, 228/230 .588/.591. Interestingly enough the cylinder walls still have alot of cross hatching. Mobil 1 since 5,000 miles.

35 psi oil pressure? Mine is around 70...of course I have a ported LS6 pump...that just seems a little low.
