Angry Engine Photo's Must See!!

Well some of you may have seen my post about a week ago about a ticking sound that most of us thought was the oil pump. I had the pump replaced and is showed the same signs.

A local LS1 performance shop "Norris Motorsports" pulled the motor and oil pan to find an old red shop towel that was caught in the pick up tube and two spun rod bearings.

I bought the car with 17,000 miles on it from a Pontiac dealer under factory warrenty and certified. Now almost 4 years later and 57,000 miles I find this out.

The rag had to of been left in there while warrenty work was being done because I have never had any work done to this car that would require removing the oil pan. The mechanic at Norris said that it looked like the pan had been off before, but the motor bearings and everything else looked like they have never been messed with or removed.

What should I do? Where should I start? Should I ask for all my service and warrenty work records for the VIN? Maybe the previouse owner had warrenty work done that would warrent oil pan removal.

Wow, havn't seen that happen before without work being done anyways. If you take your VIN into the dealership they can pull the warranty records and see if anything was even done. Maybe it was done at the factory by a disgruntled employee.

Man i am so sorry to see that happened. I really hope that some justice is found and you dont have to choke down the repair costs. I think you might have some trouble getting everything taken care of though, since you took the car apart yourself. If this was my car i would start at the first record of service and trace my way from there, you know no one is going to want to fess up to this.
Good luck with everything, and i hope the shop that caused this takes care of you.

Fast 98
Give me your email address and I will email it to you. Can you really look up the whole history? Would the dealer cover the cost or would it be my word against theirs.

My motor needs (2) rod bearings and they are going through the whole thing rods, valves, lifters, cam, cam bearing, etc... sice they found metal shavings. They quoted me between $2,000 - $3,000 to get it back up and running. I guess it just pisses me of more just to know that I am paying for someone elses "f" up.

Like I said I never had any oil pan work done to it, and it was under warrenty when I bought it at 15,000 mile so I would guess that the previous owner had something fixed under warrenty.

Sorry to here this!

Couple questions since I don't know the previous problems you had.

Is it possible (unless you changed it yourself) that when the oil pump was repalced, a rag was put down the front of the oil pan? Alot of us drop the front of the oil pan down and stuff a rag in there so the bolt hooking the pick up tube won't fall down in the pan. Then maybe they forgot to pull it out when all was done. Just grasping here..

Again, sorry to here about the spun bearings.

Dan

sounds like the damage was done before he had the pump changed.

since a shop pulled it maybe they (the stealer) will still be able work with him on getting it fixed. later!

Jeremy

EDIT: I know a guy that works (worked??) at a Chevy dealership that left a shop rag in the lifter valley of a vehicle during some intake manifold work. The owner of the vehicle was like 6 or 7 hours away from their hometown when the motor seized up. Good luck man.

if you're going to spend 3k on a repair bill, buy a built shortblock and be done with it. It'll be a little more expensive, but you won't have a stock motor after all is said and done.

Damn that messed up. I hope that you can trace down who done that. Like it was said above if you can just build up you a forged short block and be done with it if you can afford it.

Question is, did the rag cause the bearings to spin, or were they already spun before the rag made it's way to the pick up? It's kind of odd you can drive a car for 40K miles with a rag stuck in there like that and not have low to no oil pressure. I guess stuff happens though.

I agree..get a built motor if they will charge you that much to replace a couple of rods for some stock ones. My built shortblock is being built now for a total of $2500.

Bearings spin due to oil starvation. The rag is the reason for oil starvation.

I can't believe the motor lasted as long as it did with a rag chillin in there.
