I did not replace my oil pump. However, I did change the oil pump o-ring. The stock pushrods are weak and will bend. Two of mine were bent and I never missed a shift. I would get hardened pushrods. The pump is up to you but I would at least get a new o-ring.

Would a ported LS1 oil pump work well enough with a new spring installed?that should be equivilent to a LS6?

While on topic, can you advise if an LS6 would be REQUIRED for a 2002 T/A Firehawk w/224 cam. I was told that the 2002 LS1 oil pumps should be more than adequate for a baby cam.

Thoughts please, and those LS6 oil pumps are on backorder at some locations.
Am I just wasting money?

2002 came with LS6 style pump. I think that fact has been well covered. THey changed over to the new design sometime 00, so 01-02 cars are exempt from the recomended pump change.

They are different, trust me. They have the same part numbers, they just replaced one with the other.

They are one in the same and that includes the LS2 oil pump. No mystery.

Pretty normal for them to update the part number to supercede the orginal old part number with the new number.

There are no differences between the LS1, LS6 or LS2 oil pump. They are the same pump. Go to the parts dept at your local dealer and tell them to pull a replacement pump for each engine, open the box of each one and check the part number on the pump itself and all three will be the same.

Yes, at this point in time they are. They switched mid 2000. The current design is in some way newer than the old "LS1" pumps. This is virtually common knowledge on the board, or so I thought....

I know about the "new" design. But what exactly did GM do to improve and upgrade the pump? And if they switched mid production run for the 2000 model year it couldn't be a LS6 oil pump because the LS6 pump was not available at that time.

BTW - I am being sarcastic. I have a 98 and put 66K miles on my original oil pump with zero problems. Took it apart ported and shimmed it then only saw a slight increase. I bought a LS6 pump for my new setup and could not find any discernible difference between the two when compared side by side except the LS6 had a slightly stiffer spring which I attributed to mild fatigue on the old pump.

Honestly I don't know what the difference in the pumps is. All I know is that enough people whose judgement and experience I trust are in agreement on the subject.

I changed my oil pump out when I did my cam swap. I went with futarl's LS6 ported pump that only cost $135 shipped. B ut I didnt change my chain because it didn't have any play. Also you should set your rev higher because you are waisting your money when you are not going to the full power of the cam.
