Default MAF Sensor Question

I know MAF questions have been answered before, however I HAVE searched and can't seem to replicate my situation.

car: 1999 z28 m6 61k miles

My car has a nasty hesitation between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. I think I managed to narrow it to the maf, however by stroke of luck my dad had a granatelli maf from an 01 z06, doing some quick research I found that it will fit my car, so i put it on and the car ran great, i then got a ses light and did some more research. I then found that it IS NOT the right sensor, however the car runs better (although my gas mileage has gone straight to hell) I unplugged the sensor completely and the car seems to run about the same. Can a bad maf cause the hesitation i am describing? Would running no maf get rid of it even if the gas mileage is bad? If I think a new upgraded proper maf will fix it I will pony up the dough, what do you guys think?

Thanks!

No maf would = speed density, and unless your car is tuned for it, it won't run well. Sounds like you have a faulty maf. Get a new one and see if that fix's the problem I think they are like $80 from www.sdpc2000.com. It could also be an electrical issue (I had one). So if the new maf doesn't fix your problem you should try to look for possible electrical short areas. Actually i would do that before you spend money on a new maf.

My question really is this, could a bad maf, do #1) make the car run WORSE then running with no maf at all, and #2) be able to do it without tripping a ses light?

A bad maf will run the same as no maf. It is possible that it could not trip the SES, but no probable. I can't tell you about the SES from my experience because i already had it on from no emissions. If it is running rough like that, I don't see how it couldn't be on.

if you have a maf problem, disconnect the sensor. if it gets better, your maf (or maf calibration) is badly off. if it runs the same, then it's inconclusive, might be a lot of other things.

I disagree. If your motor is unmodified and healthy it should run reasonably well with the MAF disconnected. It doesn't need to be tuned for SD because it IS tuned for SD. It certainly shouldn't have "a nasty hesitation between 2000 and 3000 RPM". So, I think you may have other problems. If you're lucky it might just be plugs or spark.

i had my maf badly miscalibrated, and car ran like crap. knock all over the place. i turned off the maf, and the car woke up big time. instant throttle response, and a much harder pull. once i calibrated my maf, the car stayed equally strong and responsive after i turned maf back on.
