Default Valvetrain noise

Hi guys, I let my car run too low on oil like an idiot and now I have some knocking/ticking in my valvetrain. Its not unbearably loud but I can hear it and want to fix it. I talked to a guy who knows a WHOLE lot about cars and he told me I could just go through the valvetrain and figure out which part is wore and replace it. It REALLY bugs me and I am by no means a mechanic but I occasionally do work on my car. I did my headers and pulley but that is about it. How hard would it be for me to correct this? What do you guys recommend?

I would just throw some anti-tap oil in there, and see if it clears it up. Risilone makes some, in a yellow bottle just like pennzoil. If it works you saved money and time. It wont do ANYMORE damage.

BTW, how long did you run it with low oil?

Anti-tap oil?? Yeah, right, that'll fix it. Just pull the valve covers and see what you can find. Most likely a damaged rocker arm or pushrod. Not sure running a quart or 2 low will cause that kind of damage though. Have you over revved it possibly or missed a shift?

Nothing comes right to mind. I dont think so. How hard is it to replace rockers or pushrods?

Rockers and pr's are very easy to replace, but you shouldn't have damaged anything since you were only a quart or so low.

Thumbs up

Very easy. Here's a link to LS1HowTo. They are replacing the stock rockers with aftermarket ones, but the procedure is the same.

I dont think there should be any damage either, which is why I suggested some cheap oil! But the longer you run with a tap the more likely you WILL have to replace something that might have been avoidable.
