build or buy shortblock?
Wanna build a 382 shortblock with an ls1 block if it can be done cheaper than buying say a 402 from a sponser. (Want to stick w/ an alum block.) Was thinking ls1 block w/ all prep work, keithcraft stroker package for $1995.00. Will all of the small stuff add up like ARP bolts, gaskets, etc. to end up being more expensive in the long run. I'm also wanting to turn this into a solid roller setup. Would that handle it? Opinions appreciated.

Solid roller is gonna cost you 5000+ dollars for the heads, pushrods, T&D's, camshaft etc.
Machine work on the block and assembly should be between 1200-1600 dollars from most shops.
I dont know the keithcraft setup your talking about however pricing on parts is the same for the 382 as it is for the 402.
The iron 402 can easily be a 408/410/414 just by boring it a little more.
IMO the 408 is worth the 80lbs over the 382.
I am not a fan of the 3.905 bore and 4"stroke.
I would rather more bore then stroke.

I do not think you can beat the deal SDPC has on there 402. I have been building one myself and am having to do the legwork and labor for free. Call kris and he will set you up. He is a great guy to deal with.

Defintely buy a short block or long block, unless you like to pay for these things twice. More importantly, buy from a shop with a proven product who will stand behind what they sell you.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Wow, that is hard to beat that price from sdpc. Will definitely be calling them in the future again. ( have already ordered from them and may I say customer service is great.) How big could I go on an iron 6.0? Maybe with a 4.100" crank and ??? bore? Thanks!
