Exclamation Oil Light!!

Hey guys, since i bought my 99' Trans Am WS6 (M6) this has happened a couple of times. My low oil light comes on way before time to change my oil, but the oil pressure never changes. It reads just fine & increases w/throttle just like right after gettin the oil changed & my car leaks NO oil at all on the ground. Any ideas or anyone have this happen to them?

The pcv system on the ls1 can consume alot on sometimes differant cars. How many qt's per thousand miles do you loose? Might want to get a catch can for the pcv system to see how much oil is lost through the system. Any blue smoke in the rear view?

Check your oil level. LS1's burn oil through PCV so oil needs to be added in between changes.

no, no smoke. It usually uses about a quart between changes. Is that normal or too much? I drive it every day & race whoever thinks they r faster or every mustang i see worth embarassing. Dont mean to soud stupid, but i have heard of a lot of LS1 owners using a catch can, what exactly is it & what does it do to help? recycle the oil back to the motor?

My motor never lost a drop when I had the stock SB I have read of many people looseing a quart between oil changes. The catch can just traps the oil so it doesn't go back in to the intak where it is burned with the fuel/air mixture.http://www.accmachtech.com/pcvcatchcans.htm

do a compression check just to be safe

any puff out the exhaust when you frist start the car? if so might be valve seals

a catch can will not stop your oil consumption, itll just prevent it from going back through the intake and into the motor. if you want to stop it (given that it is coming from the pcv system) you need to do the ls6 pcv conversion

so do u have to take the catch can out & dump the old oil out like every couple of day or something? How do i do a LS6 PCV conversion? and what makes it a good mod?

And there is no smoke at all. not on start up, cold idle, warm idle, or WOT.
Thats why im confused. I have never owned a car that magically disappeared oil like this.

the stock ls1 pcv system goes through the valve covers (hence those big *** black tubes attached to them). under heavy vacuum it will actually such oil from the valve covers right through the intake manifold, into the combustion chambers, hence burning oil. the catch can "catches" the oil after the valve covers and before the intake so you will still lose oil, just wont burn it, itll be in the catch can. it takes a bit to collect but youll see it.

the ls6 pcv system goes through the valley cover under the intake so it is much more effecient and doesnt pull in oil.

take off your tb and stick you fingers in the intake manifold. if it is all sticky and wet and oily, this is probably your problem

from what i hear, it doesnt work for all, but works for most

fyi, i burn about .5 quarts every 3k miles and consider it pretty normal

Ok, So Im Gonna Get A Catch Can. I Know That Now, But What Bout That Oil Light? Sometimes It Will Be On & Say "low Oil" When I Start It, But Then If I Go In A Store & Come Back Out It Wont Be On. And Sometimes Its The Other Way Around. Could This Be A Sensor Of Some Kind Goin Out? And Remember My Oil Pressure Never Indicates That The Oil Is Low Enough To Trip The Light, Its Always The Same Pressure Weather The Light Is On Or Off.

First check the oil level. Then we talk about sensors.

OK, CHECKED MY OIL & IT WAS LOW SO I ADDED TO IT, BUT THE LIGHT DIDNT GO OFF. OIL PRESSURE IS STILL MAINTAING AT 40 & INCREASES WITH THROTTLE. i DECIDED I WILL CHANGE MY OIL THIS WEEKEND, BOUGHT A NEW OIL FILTER & SOME CASTROL GTX 10W-30 ON LUNCH. MAYBE THE OIL CHANGE WILL FIX IT. AND BOUGHT A NEW AIR FILTER TOO(SINCE I JUST DID THE FRA MOD TO MY HOOD), THE ONE THAT WAS IN THERE WAS THE SAME ONE THAT WAS IN IT WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR(4 MONTHS AGO) & WAS FILTHY. I WILL POST MONDAY WHEN I GET BACK TO WORK & LET U KNOW IF THE OIL CHANGE FIXED IT. THANKX FOR YOUR HELP EVERYONE.

If the light didn't go off your oil level sensor could be going bad. It on the pass side of the oil pn it looks like a big plastic nut W/ a wire plug coming out of it. Might want to change that with your oil.
