Default Valve Spring insert

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm replacing my valve springs. The ones I'm removing have a spiral coil insert inside the valve springs.

What is that for?
Is it necessary?

Huh. They must be aftermarket springs I guess.

Are you describing a dual spring, which is a smaller spring inside a larger one, or something totally different?

Those are what are refered to as a dual spring. What are you replacing them with?

No duel spring. Its a thin coil looking thing inserted into the spring. It looks like it might protect the valve from the spring if it broke.

Do I need to reinstall them?

I'll try and get a pic up in a few minutes.

Pics would help this greatly. I'm still visualizing a dual spring.

Here is a pic...

One of the springs broke, so I'm replacing all of them.

That's funky looking, but I'd still bet it's a dual spring.

Edit: On the borken spring, did the valve drop into the chamber and/or hit the piston? Was the inner coil broken, or did it hold hte valve up?

The valve didn't drop....thank god....

No other damage that I can tell. I just want to put the new springs on the correct way. I bought some 918s with titanium retainers to replace the old ones.

I think he is talking about the dampner. Do not remove and use with your new springs.

I'm still betting those were dual springs. Somebody who knows more should happen across this later.

The 918's won't need anything in them. Just the springs on the seats with retainers up top, and they are a great spring, BTW.

That is definately a spring dampener. It's made to keep the spring out of a resonance.

No. They come matched to the springs they are designed to be run with. You better go back with a stock spring seat also if you are installing 918s.
