Default first dyno after cam install. Time to shoot myself, or wait?

dropped the car off this morning for it to get tunned, add a LS6 intake, and ported TB

here is the rwhp #s of the first run

332 rwhp, with the converter UNlocked with stock tunning!!

I'm praying that LS6 intake and TB will help give me some more power!

should I start to worry?

any help or advice would be apprecaited

oh, the cam is a 228/224 114 .588 .581

thanks in advance

I think you converter might have something to due with that. Its going to soak up alot of power. The LS6 intake and dyno tuning will help you alot. I'd run it at the track before you go and shoot yourself. You should easily be in the 11s with some weight reduction and a good set of tires.

That's pretty nasty. Maybe it was a Mustang dyno? Have you dynoed there before?

I thought I had crappy dyno figures. I got the Yank3000 too, but stock engine, just FLPs (with cats), cutout, and FTRA/lid, and I was 325rwhp or so (unlocked). 332 with a big nasty cam is H U R T I N G.

Nevermind, I just saw you have a SY4000. You have some damn good times, I'd just run it at the track and see how it goes. It's hard for us to get good #'s from the dyno, autos really shine at the track while the M6s are the dyno queens.

Alex,

I'm glad to hear that the cam is in and running. How did you get it to idle on stock tuning in an A4? Do you know what kind of timing and a/f ratio you had on that pull? You have a ton of power to gain!

You're installing an LS6 intake, getting custom tuning, and adding a ported TB. I would also recommend an ASP underdrive crank pulley. Do you know what the car dynoed with stock internals? You can pick up 10+ RWHP with the intake, 10-25 RWHP from custom tuning (depending on how good or bad the stock tuning is doing), 5-8 RWHP from a ported throttle body (depending on quality and amount of port work), 10-15 RWHP in locking the converter, etc. FYI, I gained 15 RWHP in my '98 TA when I locked my SY4000. I would not worry about what it did before because the intake and custom tuning is going to make a significant difference. We have local customer that had another shop's camshaft, Mac headers, and an ORP, and he picked up 8 RWHP from the gain. His a/f ratio was 10:1! It was a '98 car as well.

Let us know how it does once the new parts are installed and the custom tuning is complete. Also let me know if you have any particular questions. Keep in mind that I only dyno 369 RWHP with an unlocked converter, and I have every available bolt-on possible with perfect tuning. That got me 11.40's @ over 116 MPH. Keep me posted.

Thanks for the advice!

I figured I could gain a good 10 to 15 rwhp from locking the converter...and the guy told me from what he saw the first pull, I was running way rich, so I'm sure there is power to gain!

I'll definity keep you guys posted!

thanks again

You did not provide a lot of info, but I'd like to know what the torque was too.

But, you typically want to shoot for a 12.5:1 AF, 25-28 degrees of timing, and no knock retard. I like the o2's to be arond 900, some folks like to have them leaner than that but 900 is safe and avoids detonation too.

I have found that AF in the 10-11:1 can really hurt rwhp #'s by 10-30rwhp. A big tq number and low hp number is a sign of that sometimes.

Also I dynoed 350rwhp unlocked and 375rwhp locked with a PI3600 a while back (3 years ago), so locked numbers can be much higher. I went 11.75@112 unlocked and 11.76@114mph locked with that converter... I have seen the cam you have go ~11.6@116mph with heads so I kind of expect you to go 11.8 with some traction, would that be a good gain compared to what you ran before the cam?

Sorry for the lack of info, the guy from the shop called me just to give me the #s from the first pull, so I would have some baseline #s for comparison.

My best dyno before the cam was 321 rwhp ( with converter locked ), so I know I've picked up some good power, even with the crappy stock tunning.

Trevor, as far as the idle, I knew I was gonna get tunning and a ported TB, so I just drilled the hell out of the stock TB...my idle in "D" was 1200, and in 1500 in Park

Thanks for all the help.

I dont know thats what I dynoed at when I had a cam with headers and exhaust. also ran 12.0s at 112-114 mph in the qtr.

untuned and unlocked seems pretty good to me. i pulled a baseline with my new cam(230/228,591/588, 111 +4*) and it was only 325 rwhp. tuned it in and pulled 360 rwhp unlocked.

My bet is get that car to the track & you won't give a crap what it does on the dyno

I appreciate all the advice and good info!
Once I sat down and did some math, I realized I'm not in as bad of shape as I thought I was...

Between locking the TC, LS6 intake, ported TB, and some good tunning....there has to be 35 to 40 rwhp...which would give me some good #s!

I'll make sure I post up once this is all done!

thanks again

bro one thing i just noticed is...you have mac's..go to a hooker longtube or slp longtube or something thats about a 15rwhp gain with a cam and ls6 intake....tell them to hook up a GM tech 2 and lock that converter!..also scan it with auto tap and check to see if your getting any knock retard or anything..later, good luck
