Timing chain question
Timing chain question Does a wore out loose stock timing chain affect HP #'s? My car is a 99 with 85k on the clock. Im swapping cams again & noticed thetiming chain is very loose. Normally if you spin the motor around one side of the chains is suppose to be tight correct? Well its not I spun it competely around with it still have tons of play on both sides. Could this be robbing some HP? The last time I dynoed after the ls6 intake swap, I could only pull 353hp, thats 4 less then what I dynoed with the stock intake. Im going to upgrade the chain, but I was curious to see if it affected my HP #'s
The motor compression could be moving the crank backwards slightly relieving the tension on the chain. Its physically impossible to spin the motor over without one side getting tighter. I wouldnt worry too much about the slack affecting HP, but for safety reasons, you may feel like replacing it with a new ls2 chain.
