Default After cam my car got slower

I'm pretty frustrated with my car right now.About a week and a half ago I put a comp 224/.581 cam in my car and it actually got slower.I know this because of the way it feels and because of the times on my g-timer.Tonight I decided to take it apart again to make sure the timing gears are lined up correctly, and they are.I havn't gotten it tuned yet because I have headers on order that I would like to install before the tune. But from what everyone is telling me, even without a tune I should have gained some performance.

You should have got something out of it. Header and tune will help too. Cam needs to breathe. Do you have the ls2? How well does that intake flow, if you do?

After your headers and tune you will see more benefit from the cam.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, however I have heard of this happening to gto's, because of the very resrictive air intake duct work. I was reading a magazine,(can't remember which one) and they were having the same problem. They replace the air intake with a k&n and I believe they picked up 20-30 hp because the factory air system was strangling the engine. Hope this helps

Yes the factory air induction setup is rather restrictive from what I have seen.. I personally watched 2 GTO's on the dyno and both of them picked up almost 10rwhp just by pulling out the filter from the STOCK air box..

If you dont have a good cold air kit on it then you need to get one ASAP.. If you already have one, then get the headers and a good tune and see what happens..

You are running an aftermarket cam though the stock exhaust, untuned. I wouldn't expect to gain much, if anything. Get the supporting mods, get it tuned, and THEN you can enjoy the power.

Please tell me you have an aftermarket, high stall torque converter.....

Pick up the JHP MAF pipe and cut a big whole in the front of the airbox. I'm running this setup and it works great. Last thing you want is a cone filter intake on your GTO...

What's wrong with the cone filter?

Nothing. I personally don't care for that look, I like the stock look better.

I was told that I didn't need to degree it.Just put it in straight up dot to dot.If it needs to be advanced isn't it ground wrong?

It is odd, but all you can do is wait for the tune. Did you buy the cam new or used? If it's used it might not be what you thought is was.

Dot to dot is what most people do. Degreeing is a very good idea and I recommend it, especially for people with the much larger cams....but I myself didn't degree when I installed mine.

As I said before I wouldn't expect much if anything. You have an aftermarket cam running through the stock, restrictive intake and exhaust components with no tune. Get the supporting mods, tune, and then see where you are. That's the best advice you are going to get at this point.

I talked to Comp and even they said I should feel a gain without tuning.Right now I'm trying to find a degree wheel so I can check it before I put it back together.

just tune it, then dyno it, and if the gain isnt what you expected or the typical gain, then wonder if something is wrong

I also talked to Dave, at Comp, he said when cams are custom grinde you normally have to degree them your self when installation. So thats what I`m doing to mine,
