what does head castings mean?

just curious what the casting number for heads mean? Thanks.

it's just a random number - each head casting is a little different from the others. as gm finds new stuff out, they make improvements as the years go by. some castings flow better, some worse. simple as that!

So if heads are ported, head casting #'s are worthless, right?

No, not worthless, they still tell you where the head started. A ported 243 LS6 head is going to be a lot different that a 241 LS1 head with the same work done on it...

Different port designs and chamber's. 243's start out with a higher compression ratio as well. They are basically a different design that you cannot create by just porting them.
