Default can I do this for oil pump install??

I took the old oil pump off the motor today and took it apart just to check it out and noticed that you can see the pickup tube o-ring clear as day with the pump apart. So was thinking of taking the new ported pump from TR apart and installing the main body onto the engine and after it is on but not tightened down i could look at the o-ring to be sure it is in correctly and not pinched, then put the rest of the pump together. Then i could check my clearances between the pump and crank and tighten the pump down to the engine.Has anyone done this to be sure that o-ring is in right.let me know thanks.

I have read of people doing that, yes. It's not that hard to get seated if you are carefull and pay attention, though. I had a harder time with the stupid pickup tube bolt.

the only other concern i had was the rear of the oil pan where it meets the rear cover. It says in the book to apply rtv on the back cover also. When the pan gets dropped down for the pump install i am sure the rtv breaks apart and needs to be rtv-d again before it gets bolted back up.Does anyone do this or is it even possible.??

I hadn't ever read anything about that. Ironically enough a little while after my cam swap I was leaking oil. Turned out to be the rear main seal. hmmmmm

I had my oil pump apart when I installed it, it made getting the o-ring seated properly a breeze, not to mention it made lining up the oil pump splines and crank splines easy too. The only thing you should be careful of is make sure you don't tighten the oil pump cover bolts too much, you can strip them out easily.

what is the clearence supposed to be when installing a new oil pump? Just take off the pumps cover and remove the oil pump spline and check the clearance on the crank spline?
