Talking TR230 is in!

Well after a slight delay from when I started the cam install a week and a half ago, the car is finally up and running. Heres what I installed in the process:

Thunder Racing TR230 (230/224 .575/.563 111LSA)
Hardened Pushrods (7.400")
Comp Cams 918 Valve Springs
Comp Cams Titanium Retainers
Comp Cams Valve Locks
LS2 Timing Chain

I used the Tim's/Larry's tool to do the valvespring swap and it really wasn't bad at all. I had the springs on the pass. side head swapped in about 20 minutes (off the car). And the drivers side only took slightly longer.

After waiting for the new head gasket/bolts to arrive in the mail, and picking up a new O-ring for the oil pick up tube, and working through the nights on the car b/c of my job during the day. I was making slow process in putting it back together. But once everything arrived, and I got a good two nights of solid work in, I got to slide the key in and crank'er up.

The first start it maybe fired twice and then died, the second time I cranked it up it ran for alil longer, and the oil pressure came up as it died (What a relief!) Then the third time i turned it and gave it some gas to keep it running, and after about 3-4 min of me nursing the gas it found idle by itself.

I must say, for the size of the cam, relative to the size of many of the cams out on the market, it sounds VERY mean (Running LT's & 3" duals dumped). No comment on power increase yet, b/c I just took it out for a cruise to heat cycle the springs tonight. But tom. I'll have a chance to see what she's got

I'm taking it in on Saturday morning for a fully dyno tune as well.

All in all, what started out as a fun project and turned into a big oops wound up being one helluva learning experience and alot of fun as well.

Edit* heres a short clip of it idling i took tonight (Untuned). TR230 idle

Congrats on your new cam!!

Forgive me, but i have one question. Why did you pull your heads for a cam swap?
I'm sure i'm just missing part of the story here, not trying to be a ***.
Anyway, post up your numbers when you get them!!

Stark, I had to pull the passenger side head b/c thats the side the lifters fell from. The lifters have to be reinserted from the top of the block.

I'm taking it to sean at fastech for the tuning.

Sounds good, my TR 224 is supposed to come today. It'll be nice to see more cammin cars around here in CS. I will be going to Fastech as well for my tuning/install. Let us know on what kind of numbers you get!

BTW, that's a very nice car you've got, i've seen you around a few times

Thanks man, I've seen you a few times as well that Ultra Z hood always catches my eye! I'm heading back down to CS on sat after its tuned. We'll have to meet up sometime, you ever go to sonic on .... hell i forgot what night it is... friday i think

Well i've driven it around town some more today, and as far as driveability its excellent! Once its warmed up, idle is fine, and to get the car moving, i don't have to give much more gas, if any, than when i did w/ the stock cam. Low end on the cam is great too

I have that cam right now and it's great. My best time was last night. With a brand new 9" I ran a 11.90 @ 116 the first pass.
I sprayed it at the end of the night with a 100 shot and got a 11.45@ 122.2.
I was told after I bought this cam that it was'nt good to run on the juice. But I was pleased with that time slip.
Does anyone have any expeirence with doing this??
Please share. I would like to know if there is a major down side. Not to hijack.

Your gonna love this cam!!

I have an appointment there at 9:30 for my re-tune. What time is yours at? I guess I'll most likely see you there.

I will be interested to see your new dyno #s. I am thinking of getting a custom cam that is similar only a touch bigger----234°/228° .595"/.585" on a 110° LSA +2 (108° IC). At least that is today, my cam choice will probably change 10 times by the time I can afford one .

Well the #'s at fastech came out at 386/365 .... my base line pull was 370. So sean managed to get 16 outa her ... even though the air/fuel was pretty good to begin with.

I then went to RPM (where I've had all my other previous dynos done, to get a real comparison in a before/after setup) and put down
395rwhp / 377rwtq

I'll have the graph's up tom morning hopefully. Over all I am very happy w/ the cam that I picked as well as the performance of it
