Excellent question. I am not sure the best way to do this either. I am going to try and use a strap wrench wrapped around the crack snout. I hope there is enought room to get my had in there. I have the oil pump off the engine, so might be able to make it.

That is where I was headed also... not a lot of room behind the degree wheel.

I used the Comp Degree wheel. You must take the oil pump off. Mount the degree wheel on the crank with the crank bolt. Get #1 as close to top dead center as possible. Put 0 on top of the degree wheel up, and install your pointer. Double check TDC and adjust you pointer to 0 on the degree wheel. Now use the crank bolt to turn the motor over.

Maybe it will be ok turning it that way... I am afraid of moving the degree wheel (in relation to the crank) after I have TDC on "zero"

Once the crank bolt is tight. The degree wheel is not going to move. Move the pointer if you need to move anything.

When I did mine I used the comp wheel too. I did TDC on #1 and set the pointer on the wheel. Then I turned the motor over with the crank bolt until TDC on #1 and checked evrything. It stayed where it was. It didn't take that much to turn it over with no spring load on the cam and with just the one head and checker springs. Iwas just really careful and checked everything several times. I spent most of the afternoon doing it. I used a Cloyes Hex-Adjust and got it exactly where I wanted it.

I did the same as everyone else......put the degree wheel on the crank bolt and tighten the crank bolt.....once tight, the degree wheel won't move.....

Thanks to everyone for options....

I guess I am going to use the crank bolt method.
