Default 98 LS1's?

Right now im in the market for an LS1. I was talking to a buddy and he mentioned something about looking for a 99+ because the 98's had small issues here and there......if i do end up with a 98, what kind of problems should i expect? please let me know

SEARCH!

That is one of the questions that is asked over and over and over. You will find much more information much more quickly with searching and reading 30 different threads on the topic than the responses you get in this one single thread that is beating a dead horse.

See what searching can find? This was only the second search I did, after getting too few results the first time.

I dont think theres anything wrong with 98 fbodys i have a 98z with 105k no problems with it except for water getting into my engine and the lower end of the block blew apart. But i put a 04 Z06 motor in it and now the thing is a beast. My 98z didnt even have piston slap some people have it others dont.

My old 98Z bone stock minus the lid ran 13.67 at 106.7mph in Memphis the day after I bought it. Never had a single problem out of it. This 98 TA that I have now feels like a brand new car. No problems so far

My 98SS is been a good car 32,000, I've had to replace driverside wiper motor, and the pipe to manifold gaskets. Car runs great.

I haven't had a bit of problems with mine either and with 88K and mods in sig, I still get 25 mpg on Interstate at 75 mph.

I think the issues your buddy is talking about are that the pcm is different than all the other years and is not quite as tunable (so I hear),the heads don't flow as well, the exhaust manifolds suuposedly don't flow as well, and the valve covers have perimeter bolts unlike the '99 and up(not that that is a major issue), an the oil pump is supposedly weak or something
