Well I have a picture of a cometic in the package. You can see the back side definetely has larger ports.

ya thats what im saying. It would be really hard or you would have to be in a real hurry to miss that. maybe its all the negative threads that got me thinking about it. would be nice to know what your engine would do if it was backwards though. thanks for the pic

Just mocked up mine on the motor and the driver side will have the rough side of the rivet up and the passenger side will have the smooth side up. That is the only way to get them on and line the back coolant passenges up. So Nate, yours are correct! And they would have leaked and the dyno if they ever were gonna leak!

Wow.... it is nice to get lucky once in a while. Mine are on correctly. Even though they didn't leak, it it good for piece of mind. You figure thet they could have had TOP and FRONT silkscreened on the gaskets somehow.. Especially for how much they cost...

with all the complaints cometics are getting you would think they would do something. even dabbing a bit of paint on the rivet tab, or maybe some instructions. oh well its good to have friends like john who is full of answers and is always doing something to his car big thanks john

Even if you flipped them and had the small hole on the big hole end, the hole itself wouldn't really make a diffrence in the cooling effect. There would still be a passage for the water to go through, it'll just be smaller. Granted they'd probablly leak because the big hole end dosen't line up that well with the small hole end. I still don't think the size of the hole itself has that much to do with it.

Here you go, I took a pic of the the rivets from the Cometic gaskets. Note the passenger side is right side up and the hole is smooth, the drivers side is installed upside down and the rivet is not as smooth and you can see a slit in it. Hope this helps...

The transfer holes between the block and head are at the rear of all LS engines. You must install the gaskets correctly or the transfer holes will be blocked. On an MID block (pictured) you would also end up with a serious coolant leak at the front of the motor.
Coolant enters the front of the block via the pump. Most of the coolant flows to the rear of the block cooling the cylinders. Some is diverted through small holes in the head gasket to cool hot spots in the heads. The majority of the coolant however flows between block and head through the transfer holes at the rear. Coolant then travels forward through the heads picking up more heat then out to the radiator. If the gasket is on backwards you are in for some serious overheating problems due to vastly reduced coolant flow.
The first and last photos show correct installation. The center two show incorrect installation.
