224/224 114 in 346ci = ? in 427ci Motor?
Right now in my 346 I am running the TR 224/224 114. Basically it is the largest cam I can run and safely pass smog. I have heard that as you increase the displacement of a motor, that the cam becomes "smaller" in a sense. So like a 224/224 for a 346 would be considered mild, but for a 427 it would be considered small right? Does this apply to smogable cams too? According to MTI, a 244/244 112 would be the 427ci equivalent... Or is a 224/224 still the largest cam I can run while passing smog? I am thinking any cam I get that is smogable will be severly restricting the power of that large of a motor. I will probably just have to swap cams for smog. But for right now I am toying with the idea of an emmisions friendly 7.0L engine. Thanks!

You are def going to be robbing that thing of many hp if you run smaller than a low to mid 240's duration. I would say the TR224 equivalent of a 427 would be something like a mid to high 230's duration cam... maybe even a bit higher. Just FYI, in general you don't build blocks like that if u're looking to pass smog. If you absolutely need to, just stroke your 346. You don't want to be putting all this money into a bigger cubed engine and have to detune it hardcore to pass smog. Just my .02 cents though.

I can tell you that I have a 242/242 .610/.610 114 lsa in my 436 and its TINY.
Idles like a stock car. I'm upgrading it to a 248/252 or larger as soon as couple other new parts come in. Than I'll at least have a little lope, because I have ZERO lope now, and alot more power.
MTI is wrong. A 224/224 in a 346 is not the same as a 244/244 in a 427. A 244/244 is small for a 427.
