And you do you plan to get buy them with your long tubes and catalytic converters in a non-stock location?
Im not worried about the visual inspection, just the sniffer.

If I plan to get a set of heads later on down the road would the smaller Comp cams still work well or would I be better of going with the Lunati or Speed Inc. S1

A TR 224 on a 114 should pass the sniffer....just turn the idle up a little for the inspection and they'll never hear it. The smaller cams will still work when you add heads down the road, it will be a very friendly setup. Maybe look at getting something like a 220/224 on a 115 LSA, would make good torque down low and would pass the sniffer, the MTI Stealth II is also a good choice.

Personally i'll be doing an F13 (230/232) and a 90/90 setup once i get some of my bolt on's and my 3.91's.

Sniffer is in the tune, not idle speed. basically you raise your stoich to above 15:1 (lean).
The bitch about that is that you have to retune after test to go back to 14.7:1

I was refering to this statement...

Cool. Let me know how it turns out. Judging by the sound clip im not sure if this would get past the smog guys though.

Is that an off the shelf grind? If so, by whom?

HOw would the TR220 114 compare to the Crane 216/224 115 which would make more power/torque?

mine does have a little bit of the "sewing machine" sound, but to me it doesn't sound that bad.proper valvetrain geometry(correct length pushrods)will keep the noise down somewhat.

it sounds like your on the right track for what you want in your cam. if you want information that has been tested and tried go over to the truck form's and look at the cam trhread there as these are common cam's truck guys are runnning. also talk to some of the guy's they can help a lot. I'm going to a 222/ 228 duration cam on a 112 and 585 lift in my truck on cam motion lobe. it's not a off the shelf grind it's a custon but it's not meant to save springs only get the torque number's up a bite while saving hp.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll do that.

Yeah im looking for something with better torque throughout the rpm range than the stock cam so I can get this big GTO moving lol

Same city (Baton Rouge) but wrong company.

Actually, it's Thunder Racing that's developed the CheaTR heads/cam package: AFR 205 heads (milled .030") and a 215/230 .600/.578 117LSA cam.

No, its a custom grind I got from Comp Cams. Passes smog produces tons of torque.

I passed emissions in Ohio which pretty much follows California smog requirements.

Have AFR 205 heads, Comp cam 216/220 ~ .525/.532, Weiand intake, ported TB & MAF, headers w/ long runners, high flow cats, bullet style mufflers, & Hooker resonators. Set up includes pre & post cat O2 sensors. No mocked up post cat O2 sensors or ls1 edit modifications required. There are no emissions codes created by the set up. Sniffer is not a problem. This may be similar to what you are looking for.

How would these compare in terms of idle quality and drivabilty. Power & torque. Also which would put the most stress on the valvetrain?

Spend Inc. 1 222/222 .563./.563 @ 114

Comp Cams 212/218 .558/.563 @ 115

TR220 220/220 .553/.553 @ 114

Im no expert...but like you, I have been looking a long time for the cam to suite my needs. I've been reading thousands of posts..made numerous phone calls and read so many articles, books etc that my brain is on overload and I still dont understand half of it!
I decided on the TR220 to get my fat little piggy rolling down the road.
The TR220 is more agressive than the other 2 you listed but not so much to be real noisy or affect drivability. And from what I gather..will probably make the most power for your dollar.
Anyhoo, good luck with the hunt.
I'll prob be ordering in the next week or so and have it installed as soon as it arrives. Aparently no one is running the TR220 in a GTO...that I know of.
If you still havent decided on a cam in, say, a month or so...I'll let you know.

Are you using the AFR springs with that combo? Any dyno info?
