Default Pen Magnet Question

Does anyone know how much reach (how long) and what diameter magnet you need to hold the lifters? McMaster-Car has rod magnets of various lengths and diameters, cost isn't too bad, and may be a better cheaper alternative to the pen magnets because the end won't come off.

Advanced Auto has some real nice pen magnets, I bought one for 6.52 and it holds 3.5lbs. more than enough, I believe the width was like a bit more than a 1/8 inch. If your doing that cam swap I would just get the JPR Tool from Thunder Racing. Worked pretty good for me. Cost is 84.00 might be a bit cheaper than those pen magnets.
