Default What would cause knocking after cam walked?

Cam walked backwards and after removing timing cover I found that all three cam bolts were very loose. I plan to rebuild but I just wanted car running for now to move in and out of garage (even if bearings continue to wear). I retightened the cam bolts and reassembled the car. I turned it over for ten seconds without injectors hooked up and it sounded fine. I then started the car and now I hear a knock in the motor. What are possibly causes? Could the cam have moved far enough back to shift something.

I know motor is probably junk but I just would like to figure out what is causing the noise for future reference. Maybe just a learning note.

Cam walked? Not exactly sure what you mean. Knocking could be caused by alot of things for instance the last knocking I had sounded just like a lifter but it wasnt after a month of trying different things, turns out I spun a rod bearing, causing the piston to smack the valve. Where does it sound like its coming from?

Most likely a roller tip on the lifter has a flat spot which is about to tear up your entire valve train.... this could take the short block and heads out too...

....time to tear this one down before you destroy it..

Stop guessing about what *might* be wrong and pull it apart, and know for sure.
What is known
(1) your cam prolly walked
(2) you have metal in your oil
(3) you now have knocking
(4) its logical to conclude something *very* serious is wrong with the motor, and you should not be running it
(5) stop guessing whats wrong, and find out for sure. tear it down. I know you dont want too, but it has to be done

Yeh ....what that guy said up there.

If you tear it down NOW it may not be too bad ...a few bearings, a cam, some lifters, new springs, push rods, etc.

Run this pup again - and you have converted to to an expensive paper weight....

Well this puts everything under a different light now dosnt it?

Rip into this puppy now. If its knocking after you tightened those cam bolts, it means something is in critical condition. TEAR DOWN ASAP. Its not that hard to disassemble, inspect, replace and reassemble. Tearing down now means that you dont have to worry about things like honing the cylinders, etc. Its straight forward, and it probably wont take you more than a few full days work.
