Unhappy 98-00 oil crisis

ok so i've heard about alot about the 98-00 f-bodies having problems with some oil passage or something like that. with it being to small and all. and if your wanted to throw some serious HP into, that it would be a walking time bomb. so heres my question, is there any way to fix the passage. i want to put down about 500 hp naturally aspirated. but my bro told me thats where i would start running into trouble. any suggestions would be cool. thanks all

you will probably have problems around 425 and up, especially if you have a m6- the rear end will most likely go. you can just get a ported oil pump from one of the sponsors on the right. not too much money and a good insurance policy when making that kind of power. search around a little bit and you will find all the info you want. what kind of forced induction are you planning on going with as it is hard to get 500hp n/a.

I thought the stock oiling system was more than sufficent for 500HP.

the oiling system is if you have a 01 or newer, but the rest of the car isn't.

There is no HP limit on the oiling system. The weak link in the oiling system of the 97-00 LS1's is the oil pump itself. Change that out and you will be good to go. After that, hte only other wall you could run into is oiling at high rpm (after 7200) and that requires a dry sump.

Get a ported LS6 oil pump, set and forget. All that garbage about "oiling issues" is experienced at EXTREMELY high RPM (7500+), and likely using the stock oil pump.

i thought that were was an actual oil passage in the block its self, that was preventing the use of high HP on the 98-00 f-bodies.

The "oil passage" it self, is not a defect or anything out of the ordinary! Its just a "passage" way in wich the oil travels throughout the lubrication system.

As we've already said, the only way that passage comes into effect at 7500+ RPM.

The 98-00 LS1 blocks weren't bad, GM just made them slightly better in 01+. If you want to turn 8000 RPM, get a later block. Otherwise, don't worry about it.

The highest dynoing stock cubed, naturally aspirated LS1 is a 1998 model, just for reference. He's not "running into trouble". Tell your "bro" that he's a "tool".

So GM changed the shallow oil transfer galley on the 97-99 blocks for 7500+ applications only and it did not help at lower RPM's?

No, GM found out that the 97-99 blocks weren't flowing oil at all, and they all locked up at 20k miles!

97-99 LS1s have oil return problems. 00-03 have better oil return

like it was said, the oil system isnt limiting your hp. rpms is where hp is and people re set rev limiters to get the most potential out of the motor

when the rev limiters are changed to higher rpms this is usualy how it breaks down...
