Question ENGINE question (help me out)

Sup ls1tech. Well, my engine is now done for and i'm in the market for a new one. A BIG one. What is the largest engine that can fit in a 98 m6 trans am? i've been told by a couple local friends that at 427ci is the limit. True or not? Second, i've done some research and found that the *new* 427 on a car parts site i use alot sells for around $13,000...
Even though it lays down 500, that price is killer. And what is the deal with the 408 being $8,000... HUGE price jump. Anyways, i was looking for some suggestions on what to do, and what engine to put in. Personally, i either want the big engine and loap cam, or a smaller engine with a rear mount turbo. Either way it's some fun to play with. What enginges do you suggest that arn't killer prices (8-9 g's and down), and what larger engine would you suggest. PM personal testemonies if you have been down this route, or leave a post to enlighten me and the rest of us know-nothings like me on here.
Thanks,
BorgerTransAm
Chris

I've heard alot of people are having good luck ( high hp #s ) with the 402 stroker, and it's not very exspensive.

all depends on what you want. a post by Kp put things in perspective for me a while back. it his dyno overlay of his high compression all out 414 vs a stock shortblock with a P1 or D1 at ~10psi. both setups were good for 10's at ~130, however the FI setup was much more streetable.

as far as cubes go with the new 4.200 darton sleeves (out now in limited supply but more on the way) and a 4" stroke you can achieve 443ci. with a 4.125 stroke, 457ci. or go 4.125 bore and 4" stroke for the 427. a block with the 4.160 (max bore) ready for final hone will run you ~3400 bucks. dont know the pricing on the new 4.200 setups yet. rotating assembly will depend on the quality of parts.

Assuming that he's replacing a broken motor, he'd have to buy SOME kind of motor to hook up that blower to... so it might shift the cost balance a bit.

Has anyone done a price comparo on buying a new forged 347 vs an LS2 402 vs a sleeved darton 4.2" vs the dry-sleeved LS2 4.125?

And if budget is an issue, can any of those blocks be run with stock heads until money arrives?

'Course I don't know how much of his motor is broken... is your block okay? What would be the cost of a forged 347 vs a stroker? (minimal, I assume) If one did get a 4" stroke, could it be re-used if a different block were later purchased?

I've seen forged 347's go for around 2800. Personally, I'd go with bigger cubes b/c there's just no replacement for displacement. It's a much better starting point for future mods if you're looking high HP. I just got my 408 built HPE for around $3700, Eagle crank, Callies Rods, Diamon pistons, Federal Mogul/Clevite bearings, etc. To me, that price is unbeatable for the starting point it gives you. Contact HPE, LME, FFHP, etc for shortblock pricing on 402's/408's... you'd be surprised how cheap they are now.

Engine is gone, so yes there basically is not alot usable, other than the basics and the stock heads. I really dont know the full extent of damage done, but will post later the exact parts and pricings.
Thanks for the advice everyone.

Even if it is off-topic at this point, I still think the answers to my questions might be helpful to a lot of people. If anyone knows, I'd still be interested to hear.
