Don't believe it. I've been running with mine for 50,000 miles on Mobil 1 5W-30. It defintely helps keep the engine cooler (cooler keeps air denser, more to expand) and keeps that rough, edgy exhaust note the LS1 has when it's still just below the stock running tempuratue as it's warming up. I love it. When I down shift it pops , and yeah, there is some more power, but I don't have a dyno comparison. You will want to be able to reset the fan temps to take full advantage of it. Mine are set to come on at 185, and go off at 175.

Bear in mind that if you install bigger ratio rockers you will limit you cam choices in the future to cams without a radical ramp rate on the lobes, i.e. no X-ER lobes and some others, and be sure to let the cam manufacturer know you've got non-stock rockers when you go to buy a cam. If you're going to keep the stock cam, then go with the 1.8 ratio, or adjustable, and get good advice on the push rod sizes.

why not just get PP golds or the PRC Platinums? its a package deal and you won't have to worry about matching stuff up. can pick up the whole kit(ready to install) for about 260-280 depending on where you buy it.
