Default Cylinder timing question

Coming from the 4 cylinder world, I always thought that v8s had staggered timing, as in the second piston starts its first stroke halfway through the first piston's first stroke. But looking at the LS1 crank, it seems more like the first and second piston are moved at the same time. Is this correct? If not, how does the staggered timing happen, given the crank design? Thanks.
