Was going to buy the Comp R's for my new Tony Mamo Setup, but heard of an incident where the roller shaft apparently backed out of a lifter, roller came off, and littered the engine with metal

Is this just an isolated incident or are others having same/different problems? I was under the impression that these were fairly robust performance parts with a good track history? I know Comp will replace under warranty, but that doesn't do much to help you when the engine is full of metal fragments!

I think out of the 10 people I know that run the comp r's 4 of them don't have complaints/problems. One of them did have a lifter come apart around 2000 miles after the install. They were brand spankin new too. You should get some decent feedback on this post is what I was really trying to say.

Forgive me - it's still early. I'm thinking I will be going with either new stockers (existing are fine with 30K on them but would like to have new with everything else) or the Morel

 

shaft came out on mine and made ls1 soup

 

I've been told either go with Comp 850-16 or the Mellings lifters. Both are comparable in price. Stock work well too, but with ~75,5 on my motor I'm going to replace mine.

Morel is out of stock till the end of Nov. I believe Thunder has maybe 1 or 2 sets in stock but I was told that last week.

I have had 2 sets come apart the plungers exploded on both sets. I would go with Morel for now on.

been running my comp r's for 20k miles, no problems. you've gotta remember too, people that are using these lifters are probably running big cams, otherwise you wouldn't need them. pushing the envelope is going to cause lifters to fail at times.

Well @ $500/set for the Morel's they ought to be good! Too bad no one has a quality lifter in between the stockers and Morels...

KG touches on a good point. The failure of a part may be caused by something else that is not correct in an engine. I have had 2 seperate incidences posed to me in the last few weeks:

1. Timing sets breaking. I have a customer that has lost over 50 sets of timing this year in a claimer circle track engine. He has pulled his hair out. Mild application with around .500" lift on a solid flat cam in 358's. He runs this combo in 2 classes, one at 6200 rpm and 1 at 7200 rpm. The latter will take a timing chain out after 11 races. He has tried different sets, different srprings, light valves, everything.

He spoke with Comp on the matter. He called me and ran what they said buy him, the cam profile is causing a harmonic in the valvetrain at that rpm." I said yes it is very possible. There has been alot of testing about these "power harmonics" and how critical it is to match the "spring rate" up with the lobe profile. Comp offered to Spintron test for him over the winter, my hats off to Comp for the offer and great show of customer service. We don't know yet but hopefully will have an answer but this is a prime example of blaming a part for failing when it was not its fault.

 

I ran comp-r's for 20k on a 224/228 .581 .581 cam and had no problems. When I changed to my larger cam I went with crane lifters. You might want to check them out.
