No oil pressure at guage...

No oil pressure at guage... My 03 Suburban. I was driving along on the freeway and I looked down at teh guage and it read 0 (ZERO) I pulled over and checked the oil. It was about in the middle of the normal operating range or maybe 1/2 quart from full. I started it back up and it sounded fine. I drove it carefully to the next service station and it ran fine, no knocks, no lifter clatter, not low oil light nothing. I added a half quart just to be safe and the guage bounced around a little and then came up to normal. It dropped once to about 20, but other than that it's been normal ever since.
I seriously doubt the motor was runnig with no oil pressure as it would have shown some signs of failure such as collapsed lifters and then the bearings would have gone.
Any ideas?
It's a 2003 5.3 in a Suburban.

What drives the guage on OBDII? It's all in the ECM loop isn't it? I'm sure it still starts with a classic ohmic sending unit, but I'm surprised teh computer didn't complain about the lack of oil pressure.
It's due for a change right now, I'm going to go with Syntec instead of Mobil 1 this time. I know it's not because of the brand of oil, but I just feel like changing.
