Default ticking after head install

I cant tell if it's the springs or maybe a header leak, it seems louder under the car than on top, oil pressure is about 43psi at hot idle, which is what it was before the install. I couldnt think of any way to prime the oil system prior to starting the engine, so i just started it up. There was some noise untill oil pressure built up, but i dont recall hearing that ticking noise until after i drove it around today to tune it. I reused the stock lifters, could one of them be bad ? thanx

yes......i dont know what a bad lifter in an aluminum block sounds like, hopefully it's just the double springs the heads came with, I'm gonna swap them out with the 918's i have and see if that helps

Does it sound like a sewing machine? If so, it's normal. That's from the heads.

When I had exhaust leaks, they would get louder in 4th gear when I put the car under load. That's how I could tell what the ticking was. I could feel the leak at idle when I put my hand right next to the exhaust pipe.

Some people suggest using a flower petal to check for exhaust leaks. See where it wilts.

i guess the sound is more of a tapping than ticking, like i said it is more prominent under the car and in the car than standing above the motor. Even without a full tune it doesnt sputter or stumble or backfire, there doesnt seem to be any thing to point to a major issue. The noise seems to subside as soon as you touch the gas. I put a stethoscope on the valve covers and i can hear the springs but not the tapping. I'm beginning to believe it's lifter related. Any symptoms that you know of of a bad lifter ? Thanx for the reply

i believe i have the same thing going on. kind of a hollow tapping noise when first start it. then any gas and it goes away. and it has no set pattern of when it does it? i have comp r lifters in my motor. but after my trip to track something is not right. and the lifters are the only thing left we havent checked.

well i changed the oil toady, because i put some cheap regular oil in it after the head swap to kinda flush out anything that may have gotten down in the motor while i had it apart, after driven around awhile the noise seems to come and go at will, with no rhyme or reason to it, so i'm gonna swap out the springs and see what happens.

copcar: if your car aint runnin right you may have a more serious problem than me, I have no personal expirience with Comp R lifters but i havent heard good things about them, i would probably start there if i were you

I have the same noise and it comes and goes. It's probably valve train related but since so many people seem to have it, it must be normal. At 4000 rpm you don't hear it any more so perhaps the greater oil pressure keep the lifters pumped.

It's one of my many demons!

seafoam makes an exhaust leak easy to spot.

if the valve train is ticking, something is not right. Would be best for you to spend some time measuring the valve train to make sure the geometry is correct.

i thought about the oil pressure thing too , but i have 41-43 at hot idle, oil pressure is not this motor's weak point

i cant see geometry being the issue since i used GM head gaskets, heads and bolts, if it is off it aint by much...like i said we'll see what happens when i change the springs
