Default LS2 Heads on LS1 block

If I put LS2 heads onto a stock LS1 shortblock, what kind of compression will I have? Which head gasket should I run?

Thanks
Nick

Yeah, LS2 heads are LS6 heads. Unless you get a huge deal on them, don't bother. Stock should be 10.5 to 1, depending on head gasket.

The thinnest you should run is .040 cometics. The thinner the gasket, the higher the compression.

Better off buying ported 5.3 or LS1 heads for the money. More bang/buck.

Do I use the 01 down head gaskets or 02 and up? Seems the older ones are grahite and the newer ones are MLS. Which ones for ls1 and LS2 (LS6) heads? New GM head bolts obviously at the same time.

Thanks
Nick

im going to be using the graphite ones that come on the 99's since thats what i have. i believe they're .054 in thickness, but dont know the quench.

The quench would be your compressed gasket thickness minus how much the pistons comes out of the hole.

i.e.

.054 - .008 (average for LS1s) = .046 quench

Optimum quench (for street use) would be around .038, to help stave-off knock and insure a good squish (pushing mixture towards the spark plug). Track only cars can go a little tighter, .032ish.
