Default Forged motor question..

What makes a 346 motor forged??
I have a complete 2000 Ls1 at home. I am going to strip it all down to just the block.. i plan on having a heads cam and spray car.... is it easy to just add some forged slugs to it and call it a day?
What all does the "forged motor" consist of?
Thanks
-Chris

It depends... Forged pistons definitely. You could add forged rods next. Last, forged crank. Most people will tell you that the stock crank is good for gobs of horsepower, and no need to go forged on that part. Usually an aftermarket crank is just for going to a stroker config.

You do know that the LS1 is internaly balanced, right? I doubt there is anyone in Qatar that does machine work on LSx motors.(But I could be wrong)
IMO just send the shorblock to the US for a forged rebuilt (pistons and rods), you'll be a happier man.

It's forged aluminum pistons, forged rods and the crank is also a forged 4340 piece most of the time. The difference is strength and weight. When a cast piece is made liquid steel or aluminum is poured into a mold and allowed to cool. The cast piece gets it's strength from the size or amount of metal it's made from. The piece is then machined and put into use. A forged peice is made under pressure, the pressure or compression makes the steel more dense. It is much stronger and can be made lighter because you don't need as much metal as a cast piece to have the same or more strength. It's then machined and put to use, in a nut shell that's the main difference. Stronger and lighter.
You will need to get your rotating assembly balanced if you change anything ie: pistons, rods, etc...

It is the same as any other motor, but still needs to be internally balanced and blueprinted.

I'd let a reputable shop do the assembly.
