such thing as high oil pressure?

I drive a 2000 trans am with 56,000 miles on the clock. my question is, is it normal for it to frequenly peg the oil pressure gauge at 80 psi, while running in 90 degree heat? At start up it will make about 60 psi and when it gets warm it will idle at like 50psi or up, but when you press the go pedal it hits 80psi with ease. I bought the car used so to my knowlage all the internals are stock. i am using mobil 1 sythetic 10w-30.

You may want to try 0W30 as your oil pump seems to be a good one.

I don't think you are damaging anything at that psi. My dry sump pump pushes out 80psi when cold and a reliable 50-60psi when hot with 0W30.

I will usually go a little north of 60 psi at WOT above 3500 rpm. Not sure how much north of that since I'm more focused on the road and shifting at that point. I run 10w30, so I too might switch to a 5w30 or 0w30.

check your oil sensor. turn car to on position but do not start car and look at oil pressure. it should read "0" if not your sensor is bad. very common problem.
