Default Ls1 Vs Ls6 Bottom End

ok i know their many top end differences in ls1 motors vs the ls6 but what about bottom end? Is it basically the same pistons, crank, block, rods, berrings? if not what is different? also lets say whats the difference between a 2002 ls1 and 2004 ls6 if that matters...

I beleive the pistons are made of a harder more durable substance, not as good as forged obviously

The blocks are slightly different; the LS6 has ports between the cylinders to even the back pressure on the pistons.

Knock sensors relocated, I think, too, plus slightly different cast to improve oil flow and cooling. There're several past posts and on-line articles about the block differences if you search a little. (LS1 vs LS6 Block Strength was one topic...)

What I'm not sure about are the connecting rods...

That explains most of the block differences. 01 cams/springs were different though than later LS6's.

to clarify an ls1 bottom end with ls6 top end would perform just as good as a true ls6 ??

Stock bottom end for either is good to what, 600HP/6800rpm I hear. Can't say for sure, since I haven't broke one yet.

Either block is just as good, but the LS6 block should theoretically produce slightly more HP, if just because of less friction (back pressure on the cylinders). I don't think there's enough difference between them to worry about, so go for the best $$ deal. The choices you make for almost every other part you build up will have more affect than block choice.

For either block at 7 grand I think you're into after-market connecting rods and bolts plus heavy duty dual springs and at least. It will depend on the cam's lobes/ramp rate. You may have to go with new lifters, too. Limit it to rpm to 6800, and you can get away with less bottom build up and put your money into go-faster parts.

I would say the biggest difference in the ls6 short is the pistons. In fact that would be the only "real" difference as far as performance goes. I don't think they are a lot stronger than the ls1's ones though.
