probably becuase the only way to get the power steering pump off WITH the pulley on it, is to take the water pump off. it has to do with one of the three bolts that hold the p.s. pump on. impossible to get at with the water pump on AND the pulley still on the pump.

I got both heads disconnected w water pump on, p. steering pump still on. Having trouble taking the farthest screw on drivers side off. The plastic p.s. pump box is still on so I cant get the wrench in there with enough room to break this last screww on. How do you take it off with that plastic box still on.

So are you guys saying in order to get the lower power steering bolt off, either the water-pump or alternator has to come off? Which is easier?

with a wrench , very slowly..it'll take a little while, kinda pull the p/s pump away from the head as you loosen the bolt

Just take that water pump off cause you got to do it sooner or later. Raditor can stay in if you are just swapping heads...other wise you should of taken that out at the beginning of the install for swaping cams.

Keep cleaning! I was out there for several hours getting coolant out of those holes. Paper towel, compressed air, and a tap to clean them out with...its a pain in the ***.

Make sure you drained the coolant as well.

i don't see why you guys fight the p/s pump bolts. 2 min and the pulley is off and and very easy access to all the bolts. much easier in my opinion.

Alright after taking a little break for tonight I thought I share my progress along with some obsticles/questions. heads are off the car, drivers side is off with the p. steering pump assembly still on it(disconnected hose), fuel rail is still attached by the fuel line on the block and in the way.
i drained the coolant from the lower hose out from the radiator. after taking the heads off and cleaning it I noticed a few thing on one of them:
the face of the valves are black one only one head, the other clean it back to polished, why is one like that?
2nd: on the sealing ring around one of the cylinders has minor scratches(not deep) where it would be in contact with the gasket.
3rd: on the corner of the same head it has a indentation that stands out about thalf the thickness of a dime. Can I sand/grind that little corner off w/o hurting the way it will seal after? I could send pics to someone if they will post so u guys can see it . I would hate to mill the heads b/c w/ the turbo I would like to keep the as low compressionas possible.
Where is the coolant drain plug in the block?
how do I disconnect the fuel lines off the rail?
since w.pump and radiator r still connected will I be able to get all the coolant out of the way to clean the head bolt holes if I drained it?I have coolant in my exhaust/gasket leak, due to bad install of a local shop, that Ill be taking to small claims for f***ing my car motor up, wich is why Iam doing this myself.
Whats the best way to flush the coolant in my engine and have clean oil?
any of the questions u can answer for me would be very helpful, and thanks for the help so far.

1. if it's just a scratch it's fine
2. is it an "indentation" or does it "stand out" ?
3.1 above the starter, 1 above the oil filter
4. you'll need a quick disconect tool that you can find at most auto parts stores
5. yes, see #3
6. wipe down the cylinders with an oily rag to remove any residual coolant, then drain oil refill with fresh oil...there's no other way
